Reliance JIO had announced that they will be launching JIO phone for Rs 0. But users have to pay Rs 1500 cash deposit to get the phone. The bookings of the phone will be from August 24, phone will be available from September on first come first basis. So recently Airtel announced that it will be launching some bundled offers to compete against JIO.
Airtel Plans bundled offers
In the investor call after announcing its Q1 results for fiscal 2018, Airtel MD & CEO Gopal Vittal said the country's largest operator is not interested in manufacturing phones & maintaining inventory.
Instead it plans to join hand with 4G feature phone manufacturers & offer bundled plans for the devices. Airtel has also announced to launch plans to launch 4G VOLTE services by March 2018, JIO is only the present VOLTE network in the country. Airtel is already offering some bundled offers for some smartphones so this strategy will be an extension of an existing ones.
Lava is the only brand with a 4G feature phone in the market, soon Micromax, Karbonn, Intex are expected to join the fray. JIO will start shipping for beta trials on August 15.
JIO is expected to sell 100 million units of JIO phone within a year but the device will be locked to the company's own network.
