Kolkata will be the first city to get underwater metro in India. It will use transportation tunnel built under the Hooghly.
The metro will pass through tunnels several feet under the Hooghly. The tunnel has been constructed 30 metres below riverbed just a few metres away from the famous Howrah bridge, built in the last century to connect Howrah & Kolkata. It will be connecting two main terminals Howrah & Sealdah each of which has a footfall of about 10-12 lakh passengers per day.
More than 10 lakhs tonnes of mud have been dug out during the construction of this tunnel. First tunnel is ready its entire stretch is 16.6 kilometre. While the second tunnel is yet to be completed.
